Fun for Preschoolers
We purchased this item for our preschool class and the kids LOVE it! We don't use the reproducible patterns, we just give the kids a basket of the "nails" and let them pound away! We can fit four kids around it so we had to borrow hammers from our tool bench area. You can replace the foam cover and ...we usually replace it only once or twice per year. Go ahead and buy the replacement when you order so you'll have it on hand! I don't agree with the age recommendation of 8 and up. I think 4 and up is better!

Poor design
The idea of this is great for kids. However, I returned this because once you begin to pound pegs through the foam and the foam becomes full of holes, it's ruined. Your child just ends up hammering the pegs through the existing holes and it takes the fun out of this activity. Not to mention that ...part of this toys purpose is to build gross and fine motor skills and when you easily pound a peg into an existing hole, well it defeats this purpose. A possible solution to improve this product is to have replacement foam that you can change after the old one becomes covered in holes. But it may not be worth it as it would be a waste of material and you would have to pay to buy replacement foam.

I wouldn't reorder this product because of the following reasons: 1. The foam does not provide enough resistance, especially after it has been used a number of times. 2. The holes are in the foam do not close and after a while the foam begins to crumble. 3. The foam/stand has a strong smell, which some children dislike.

This was a birthday gift for my son who turned 4. It's recommended for children 8 and up but my son can use it easily and doesn't require supervision. The table is very stable and the hammers and "nails" are sturdy. An improvement on the product would be to make the table self-healing.
Merchant Response
It should be noted that Discount School Supply recommends this product only for ages 8+ and for use with adult supervision.

I bought this for my nephews and my daughter. They all love hammering in the nails. They are not that big into the patterns so the foam has lots of holes. I did learn a trick. Instead of buying the replacement block, I run into Lowes hardware or Home Depot and buy a piece of foam board. Its a lot cheaper than the replacement blocks and a lot faster (no waiting for the foam to arrive in the mail). All the kids in the neighborhood love to play with this toy. Good thing there are 2 hammers!

My kids went crazy over this! I teach 3's and even my young 3's can make the patterns work, no problem. Nice as a fine motor work out and they love it- even the 'girly' girls. They are proud of their 'pictures' when they finish. Fantastic product. I also take the foam boards and let the kids work cupcake picks in as the seasons change.

I used these as an activity with letter recognition. My students were quite enthusiastic and the foam shows the wear and tear after its fist use.
